The Economic History Society seeks to appoint two Series Editors to lead on the scholarly oversight of its new series Debates in Economic and Social History to be published by UCL Press. The two appointments are to take effect from 1 January 2026 to coincide with the launch of the series and the centenary of the Society’s foundation.
Debates in Economic and Social History will publish two volumes a year (open access, print, and e-book) providing concise (40,000 words) and authoritative guides to cutting-edge research in the field. In line with the core aims of the Economic History Society, the series will fill a gap in the publishing market and promote the use of Economic and Social History. The subject is embedded in broad courses and research programmes across a range of disciplines (including history, economics, business studies, political science, sociology, and others), as well as in more specialized courses for senior students and postgraduates. There is strong demand for short, focused surveys of key debates among teachers, students, policy makers, and commentators. The series will have an international approach in its choice of subjects, and authors, and aim to balance coverage of different themes, geographical regions, and chronological periods to serve Economic and Social History’s global community. Two volumes are currently contracted for publication in late 2026 and others are under discussion.
The Society is looking for Series Editors with complementary research experience, one in medieval and modern and one in any field of modern history, with at least one specialising in European or Global History.
Series Editors’ Roles
A full editorial board will support the editors in developing the series comprising the Chair and one member of the Publications Committee and a member of staff at UCL.
The position attracts an annual honorarium linked to the volume of publications and currently set at £250.
