The British Association for Local History runs a series of ‘Local History Hour talks’ with a variety of speakers.

This month we focus on the changing world of the draper in the 19th century and how the trade was affected by consumer demand, advances in technology, the increasing availability of mass-produced and branded clothing, retail chains and department stores. Where does Thomas Burberry fit into this wider world of drapery? How unusual was he?

The speakers are Dr Mike Winstanley, formerly Senior Lecturer in History at Lancaster University and Dr Barry Shurlock, local historian and a trustee of the Hampshire Archives Trust.
