The Institute of Historical Research’s History Lab is pleased to announce that its flagship conference will be taking place virtually next year on Tuesday, 19th July 2022, and is now accepting abstract submissions. The theme of the conference is
Histories in Crisis: Experiencing and historicising moments of conflict. The conference will feature a keynote presentation from Dr. Amanda Power.
Conflicts and crises define eras. They naturally attract historical enquiry, and they also connect the past to the present. Global pandemics, environmental catastrophes, human rights inequalities, and ongoing humanitarian emergencies are but a few examples of the challenges that societies face today informed by historical legacies and contingencies. The aim of this conference is to reflect on how we study historical and ongoing crises, to provoke new approaches and frameworks, and to consider how individuals, societies, and historians have experienced, conceptualised, and reacted to crises broadly defined.
Proposals may consider the following themes but are not limited to:
- Histories of emotion
- Agency and structure
- Politics, partisanship and ideology
- Conflict resolution
- Ethics of studying crises
- Activist histories
- Collaboration/resistance/adaptation
- Peace and war
- Gendered and/or racialised conflict
- Dissenting voices
- Environmental crises
- Quotidian experiences/microhistories
We welcome submission by both MA & PhD history students from across UK-based institutions. We welcome submissions from all historical periods and all geographic and thematic perspectives.
Please send abstracts of no more than 300 words along with a short bio to Waseem.ahmed.21@ucl.ac.uk with the subject title ‘History Lab Conference 2022’ by Tuesday, 1st March 2022.
