IHR History Lab’s annual conference (online)
18th July 2023

The Institute of Historical Research’s History Lab is pleased to announce that its annual conference will be taking place virtually on Tuesday 18th July 2023. We invite abstract submissions for 20 minutes papers and 5-10 minutes lightning talks by postgraduate researchers (MAs by research and PhD students) based in UK institutions in history and all related disciplines. We encourage interdisciplinary approaches and welcome proposals on all historical periods on the theme of:

Historia interrupta? Failed continuities, successful revolutions, and moments when everything did or did not change

Continuity and change are two of the most fundamental elements of historical research, and perhaps also the most controversial. From technological inventions and political assassinations to volcanic eruptions and viral mutations, the timeline is littered with interruptions and derailments where abrupt changes seem obvious. Yet when these interruptions are perforated with continuities, how far can we actually say that things change? The aim of this conference is to reflect on how we approach moments of historical interruption, and to share insights from new generations of historians on how we can understand continuity and change.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

Political interruptions such as changes in governments and/or heads of state, scandals, revolutions and/or coup d’état, changes in ideologies and/or radical reforms

Social and cultural interruptions such as religious controversies, reforms and/or wars, imperial or colonial intrusions, censoring and persecuting ideas and minorities, interrupting and breaking from social norms (activism or artistic styles)

Scientific and environmental interruptions such as discovering and interrupting knowledge, experiments and technological failures, geographical or meteorological events, curing and/or evolving diseases

Deadline: 23rd December 2022. Please submit abstracts (300 words maximum) with a short bio to garroo@uni.coventry.ac.uk and for any questions contact the conference convenors darren.reid.20@ucl.ac.uk or garroo@uni.coventry.ac.uk .
