Following the successful editions of 2022 and 2023, the Escuela de Doctorado de Navarra (EDONA), the Institute for Advanced Research in Business and Economics (INARBE), and the Department of Economics at the Public University of Navarra (UPNA) are pleased to announce the III Conference Globalization and Growth in the History of East and Southeast Asia. The conference will be held in person from Monday, December 15th, to Tuesday, December 16th, 2025. Online presentations will be permitted only in exceptional cases. For in-person presentations, presenters are expected to cover their travel and accommodation expenses, although limited funding may be available to partially offset costs for participants traveling from within Spain. To attract attendees to Pamplona, this edition features Jean-Pascal Bassino from the École normale supérieure de Lyon as the keynote speaker

Conference information:

This two-day conference aims to bring together researchers studying various aspects of the economic history of East, Southeast, and South Asian territories over the past 200 years.  Special emphasis is placed on papers addressing topics such as foreign trade, trade policy, trade costs, economic growth, inequality, migration or foreign investment. However, studies examining other specific elements of the region’s long-term economic performance and research about Central Asia and the Middle East are also welcome.

The conference aims to bring together early-career and senior scholars to exchange data sources and methodologies for exploring the connections between globalization and economic growth in East and Southeast Asia. To foster reflection and discussion on this topic, Jean-Pascal Bassino from the École normale supérieure de Lyon will deliver a keynote speech. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to enjoy the late-autumn landscapes of Pamplona, known as ‘the pearl of Northern Spain,’ while engaging with senior economic historians and PhD students from the Public University of Navarra (UPNA)
