The Economic History Society awards a prize of £1,000, on a biennial basis, for an outstanding book in Economic and/or Social History.
The winner of the Outstanding Book Prize will be announced at the annual conference.
Eligibility
Nominations are normally restricted to books published by authors who are more than 10 years beyond the award of their PhD, or who have previously published a monograph and are therefore no longer eligible for the First Monograph Prize. Current Officers of the Society (President, Secretary and Treasurer) cannot be nominated. The authors of the nominated book do not need to be current members of the Society.
Only monographs published in English and published during 2025 and 2026 will be eligible for the 2027 prize.
Books published by 31 December 2026 will be eligible for consideration, however, the nomination must be made by the 30 September deadline and copies of the books must be reach the judges by 31 December 2026. The book’s date of publication, not the date of copyright, will define eligibility. If a book is a translation of a book previously published in another language, it will be eligible based on its date of publication in English.
