The mechanization of cotton spinning in England c.1780-1850 and its impact on employment and wages

My PhD research is focused on the mechanization of the cotton industry in England c.1780-1850. I am analysing wage data from different cotton mills in order to examine the impacts that the introduction of new technologies and ways of working had on gendered employment and wages. The EHS bursary was used to fund a research trip to Manchester to photograph wage books from the Quarry Bank Mill archive and to employ a research assistant to help me digitize the huge amount of data collected for the fourth chapter of my thesis. This would not have been possible without funding from the EHS.
