Daniel is a fourth year (part-time) History PhD student at Northumbria University, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. His research examines cross-cultural trade, specifically through the lens of expatriate merchant communities at points of limited difference. His thesis studies the German and Scandinavian merchant communities of Newcastle from 1840 to 1920, considering whether they were successful, and to what extent this was based on integration, or lack thereof, and on human, social and financial capital.
