Thriving, surviving, and declining: industrial jobs and the geography of deindustrialisation in twentieth-century England and Wales

I am very grateful for the financial assistance given to me by the EHS during the final year of my doctoral research. My thesis uses official data and documentary sources to provide a new history of deindustrialisation processes in England and Wales after the First World War. It shows that deindustrialisation took different forms in different places, and that these forms offered different prospects for working-class people. Thanks to the bursary, I was able to conduct additional research on anti-urban dispersal policies at the national archives in the autumn of 2023 before writing up my thesis.
