‘Nipcheese’ the Beancounter: Purser accounting and accounting change in the Royal Navy 1665-1832

I am most grateful to the EHS for the award of a bursary, enabling me to complete my thesis and to expand my research during the last year of my PhD studies. My research focuses on the accounting of pursers, the on-board accountants, responsible for provisioning the sailors in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries and explores related developments in Royal Navy accounting.

The bursary provided financial support during my writing-up year,  funding trips to archives to consolidate my research and finalise my thesis.  It assisted me to attend and present at an international conference in Italy and to carry out further research at the Pepys library in Cambridge
