Tawney Fellow, 2025/26

Nicholas Fitzhenry is an economic historian specialising in historical demography, public health and twentieth-century South Africa. He completed his PhD at the London School of Economics in 2025, with a thesis examining racial inequalities in mortality and healthcare provision during the apartheid era. His research combines archival sources, demographic techniques and econometric analysis to trace the historical evolution of health disparities. During the Fellowship, Nicholas aims to transform his doctoral research into journal articles while developing a new project, in which he will create a comprehensive dataset of healthcare professionals trained or practising within Britain and the British Empire (c. 1850-1960), examining the geographic distribution and migration patterns of medical workers across the empire.
