The maturing of the mortgage market 1971-1992
During the year I have fully resourced the archival material and written first drafts of two chapters for my thesis. These detail the clearing banks pivot towards mortgage lending. Mortgages had previously been the domain of the Building Societies. Deregulation and the competitiveness within banking led the clearers to encroach into this profitable business. Following this I have been re-marshalling previously procured primary material into a chapter on the deregulatory period in 1971 to 1973 that unshackled the banks – breaking up their cartel and putting in motion the change that culminated in the 2007-2008 Global Financial Crisis.
